More about the York Gin Discovery Box

In more normal times, here are details of the experiences we offer.
The Bloody York Gin Tour with ‘Mad Alice' and visits to the York Gin Distillery.

The Bloody York Gin Tour

The Bloody York Gin Tour is a two-hour walking and gin-drinking tour, mixing horrible history and restorative York Gins at three bars along the route.

You'll be led by award-winning ‘Mad Alice’ - one of TripAdvisor's most popular tour guides in the city.

We highly recommend this tour - it's completely different and a thoroughly entertaining way to appreciate York's macabre history. It's unlike any other gin tour!

It follows the stories of the city’s most notorious and lesser-known outlaws including Guy Fawkes, Dick Turpin and ‘The Yorkshire Witch’, Mary Bateman.

The tour price of £35 includes 3 different single York Gin & tonics, including the Navy Strength (57%ABV) York Gin Outlaw - our tribute to the city’s villains.

The tour is in the centre of York, starting outside the beautiful and historic York Gin shop on Pavement.

Your guide, Mad Alice - knowledgeable and entertaining

‘Mad Alice' is one of York's best tour guides - and what she doesn't know about York and gin isn't worth knowing.

She knows York and its drinking holes like the back of her hand - and she'll introduce you to three of the city's finest bars for your York G&T stops.

She made the finals for the Tourism Superstar Awards in the 2018 Visit England Tourism Awards, and was voted Guided Tour of the Year in the 2019 Visit York Tourism Awards.

The historic Mad Alice, who reportedly died in 1825, is a figure of local folklore. Was she hanged as a mad woman? Did she poison her husband? Certainly there’s a lane In York named after her.

There's lots more info about her on her website

Distillery visits

The distillery is about a 10-minute drive from the centre of York - past the Archbishop's Palace and the village of Bishopthorpe.

Address: Unit 1, Acaster Estates, Cowper Lane, York, YO23 2TX

You're welcome to pop in on spec and we'll happily show you around (if we’re not actually making gin, talking on the phone, dealing with deliveries, etc). It's a good idea to call first on 01904848900. Please note: We don't yet offer organised distillery tours.

You can buy bottles of York Gin and gift packs at a 10% discount of the website price.

If you want to make your own gin, there are several gin schools in Yorkshire - Rare Bird in Malton, Hothams in Hull and Slingsby’s in Harrogate.
